What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a form of 'alternative' or 'complementary' therapy involving a method of massage-like treatment to specific reflex areas found in the feet and the hands. Most commonly, the feet are used over the hands. Treatment encourages the body to balance itself and to return to its natural state of equilibrium.
In the feet, there are many reflex areas corresponding to all parts of the body. These areas are arranged in such a way as to form a ‘map’ of the body in the feet with the right foot corresponding to the right side of the body and the left foot corresponding to the left side. By having the whole body represented in the feet, reflexology offers a means of treating the body as a whole. This is an important factor of a natural therapy and allows not only symptoms to be treated but also the causes of symptoms.
This method has been used for several thousands of years and is known to even have been practised in a similar manner by the Chinese and the Egyptians.
It is also important to note that that doctors, consultants and other health care professionals recognise reflexology as a well established, respected and effective therapy.
Most people who have experienced treatment would agree that the method can be most beneficial and is also a very relaxing therapy.
What Ailments can Reflexology Treat?
Reflexology does not claim to be a 'cure-all' but numerous disorders are often successfully treated through treatment. These include:
Back Pain
Migraines
Infertility
Arthritis
Sleep Disorders
Hormonal Imbalances
Sports Injuries
Circulatory Problems
Digestive Disorders (e.g. IBS)
Tension & Stress Related Conditions
Who Benefits from Reflexology?
As a treatment, reflexology is suitable for all ages and can bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. Following the completion of a course of reflexology treatments (usually 6) for a specific condition, many people often continue with regular treatments in order to maintain their new found health and well-being.
Many people also use reflexology simply as a way of relaxing the mind and body and for counteracting stress.
With ever increasing levels of stress through modern day living, it has become more important to take responsibility for our own health care needs. Reflexology is a great way to achieve this as treatment helps one to cope on a physical, mental and emotional level thereby encouraging healing and better health in all areas of our lives.
How long does it last?
Each treatment will last approximately one hour. Your first treatment will last slightly longer as a preliminary chat will be required in order to determine your past and present health and lifestyle. This helps to ensure certain reflexes can be given more attention if required.
Where do I have to go for treatment?
Treatment is best carried out in a quiet environment where you can totally relax and won’t be disturbed. If you wish this to be your own home then treatment will be carried out there. However, many clients choose to visit our own peaceful and very relaxing studio for treatment.
Wherever you decide to have treatment, you will be made comfortable either in a sitting or lying position with your feet slightly elevated.
But I am Ticklish!!!
This is not a problem!! Although treatment is to bare feet, the pressure applied is quite firm but not uncomfortable. Any areas in which you do feel some brief discomfort indicate an imbalance or some tension in that area of the body. These areas can then be carefully worked so as to help alleviate the problems.
